Geophysics 100 years Forum

Monday, October 29, 2018 · 08:45 h.

Geophysical research increasingly requires global multidisciplinary approaches. The view of our planet as an interconnected system emphasizes the need for understanding how deeply interrelated are Earth components and processes and the impact and pressure of population growth, increased use of mineral and energy resources, climate change, contamination, deforestation and biodiversity loss.

Developing countries present additional challenges resulting from limited economic resources and social and political problems. Developing countries require improved educational and research programs. Needed are in-depth analyses of infrastructure and human resources, and identification of problems, challenges and opportunities. What are the major limitations and needs in research and postgraduate education in developing countries? What and how should international collaboration do? What are the roles of individuals, academic institutions, funding agencies, scientific societies? Analyses must address current situation, size and characteristics of research communities, education and capacity-building programs, facilities, social-economic development, implementation of bilateral and multinational collaborations, and the challenges and perspectives in an international context.

In this context international research collaboration has an immense potential, required for further development of the Earth sciences. We need further coordinated efforts to develop research and education in geosciences, scientific infrastructure and new initiatives for promoting and strengthening scientific cooperation.
