Title:
Geothermal energy unrelated to Quaternary magmatism

Description:
Geothermal fields studied and exploited so far in Mexico are associated with Quaternary silicic magmatism. However, there are several areas of the country with important thermal anomalies unrelated to Quaternary magmatism, whose source of heat has not been explained. In this session we propose to discuss the causes of this thermal anomalies and its geothermal potential presenting studies that involve geology, geochronology, geophysics, hydrogeochemistry, hydrogeology and modeling. In this context, preliminary results of ongoing interdisciplinary studies on unconventional geothermal areas in the southeastern part of the Sierra Madre Occidental will be presented. The results of projects with these characteristics in other areas of the country are also welcomed.

Title:
Modeling of atmospheric processes: theory and applications

Description:
The study of the dynamics of the atmosphere requires a balanced relationship between theory and experimentation. This area of research has a well-documented set of conservation laws, which allows a rigorous theoretical treatment. However, the theoretical results refer mainly to idealized situations and, therefore, in real cases these results are only valid with some degree of approximation. However, the exact results obtained analytically under several simplifying assumptions are important not only as basic elements in the creation of a theory, but also to test computational algorithms and computer programs in numerical simulation. Therefore, it is necessary to supplement the theory with computational experiments.

The dynamics of the atmosphere is an exciting subject, with important practical applications ranging from weather forecasting and climate change to the dispersion of air pollutants and control of pollution sources.

Works devoted to theoretical issues well-grounded by rigorous mathematical analysis, as well as studies with results of modeling or numerical modeling of various processes taking place in the atmosphere, are invited to participate in this special session within the framework of the Annual Meeting of the Mexican Geophysical Unión (RAUGM-2018).

Title:
Progress and results using data from the RUOA network

Description:
The University Network of Atmospheric Observatories (RUOA in Spanish) comprises ten observatories and five meteorological stations installed in different academic institutions scattered throughout Mexico. The main purpose of the network is to produce reliable atmospheric information relevant to topics such as air pollution, climate change, hydrological resources, and food security among others. The network includes the participation of several state universities and institutes from UNAM. All the information generated by the network is made public and can be consulted and downloaded free of charge at www.ruoa.unam.mx.

The RUOA calls for contributions from researchers involved actively in the network as well as its users (researchers and students) to present the results of their investigations and projects in any area, in which the data generated by the RUOA network have been used. In this special session, contributions featuring the progress made on the development of a quality assurance and quality control workflow, database structures and metadata implementation as well as the incorporation of new sites to the network will be accepted.

The objectives of the session are: 1) to present a general outlook of the range of projects that are using RUOA data to promote research and education in science and technology, and 2) to open up a feedback channel between those in charge of the daily operation of the network and the its community of data users.

Title:
Geosciences in society: education, outreach and dissemination

Description:
The development of Geosciences in our country has been increasing exponentially in the last decades. This is due to the scientific and technical interest of geoscientists. Learning about the dynamic of Earth and the processes which formed the enormous geological wealth of México, is and will always be, the purpose of Geosciences. Geology has extended its horizons and now it takes into account other sciences such as Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology among others.

Geology's diversity, has favored the development of Mexican scientists. They have become more capable to understand Earth's phenomena surrounding them. An outstanding understanding, assimilation and dissemination of Earth Sciences is vital. Researchers must work on finding easier ways for teaching science for everybody's comprehension. A good researcher must have interacting skills and being committed to his work.

The objectives of this session are mainly the exchange of teaching techniques and innovative tools in the the process of education, outreach and dissemination of Earth Sciences in our country. These techniques might include tasks able to be managed inside and outside classrooms, they should be reachable everywhere and free for the society. The session accepts works related to Earth Sciences' outreach and dissemination, curriculums, impact and social retribution, and new teaching methods.

Title:
Regional climate modelling and CORDEX

Description:
Los modelos regionales climáticos son una poderosa herramienta para mejorar el conocimiento de los procesos físicos, químicos y dinámicos del sistema océano-atmósfera-continente que regulan el tiempo y el clima presente y sus posibles cambios. El crecimiento computacional ha favorecido el desarrollo de un gran número de modelos globales y regionales del clima. Proyectos multiinstitucionales de intercomparación de modelos regionales como CORDEX (Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment) han generado salidas de modelos climáticos regionales a 50 km y están generando simulaciones a escalas aún más finas (25 km) forzadas con modelos globales en un periodo histórico y bajo diferentes escenarios de emisiones. Esta información está disponible a la comunidad científica y es relevante para estudios de procesos, para evaluar los posibles impactos del cambio climático en diferentes regiones y para la toma de decisiones y adaptación al cambio climático.

En esta sesión se solicitan temas (en español o inglés) o sobre:
1) Implementación y validación de modelos regionales climáticos en diversas regiones del mundo, con particular énfasis en los dominios de CORDEX.
2) Estudios de diferentes procesos físicos regionales presentes y sus posibles cambios en el futuro utilizando modelos climáticos regionales (dinámicos o downscaling estadístico).
3) Estudios de VIA (vulnerabilidad, impactos y adaptación) al cambio climático.

Title:
Geothermal: results and achievements from Mexican projects

Description:
The Geothermal Special Session aims to share the results of projects and thesis work conducted in the academy and in the companies of the geothermal sector. We expect contributions related to recent works for exploration or exploitation of geothermal resources, both in Mexico and abroad. We hope to share results and advances in projects that are carried out in Mexico, although the session is also open to sharing experiences abroad. Works related to high-enthalpy geothermal for power generation are welcome, but also those about the direct use of geothermal heat in diverse applications. Contributions can be in scientific research and/or technological developments, demonstration projects, case studies, thesis results, etc.

Title:
Stratigraphy, sedimentology and tectonic evolution of North America: celebrating the geological career of Tim F. Lawton in Mexico

Description:
The study of sediments and the provenance analysis of clastic successions in Mexico have significantly contributed to a better understanding of geological processes and events, which have built up our country in the last 300 million years, from the assemblage and break up of Pangea to nowadays, passing through the construction of the Mexican Orogen. We invite you to participate in this session with recent contributions on the geological evolution of northeastern, central and southern Mexico during the Mesozoic and the Cenozoic. Particularly, we welcome works that integrate new information based on field work, stratigraphy, sedimentology, petrology and geochronology of sedimentary rocks, and synsedimentary deformation so we can reconstruct the tectonic evolution of Mexico. In this forum we aim to review important advances on the Mesozoic and Cenozoic evolution of Mexico, at the same time that we celebrate the contributions and influence of a remarkable American geologist, Dr. Tim F. Lawton, on the understanding of the geology of our country.

Title:
Paleoseismology, seismic and tsunami hazard

Description:
A CONSIDERABLE NUMBER OF POPULATED AREAS are located on active plate boundaries where great earthquakes and tsunamis have occurred in recent, historical and prehistorical times. Scientists have been working into explaining the origin and recurrence of these events to improve their ability to assess seismic and tsunami hazards in the near feature.

This session aims to bring together a broad spectrum of scientists, who deal with such diverse questions as paleoseismology, tectonic models, and assessment of seismic and tsunami hazard, and the public’s preparedness for natural disasters. It is an opportunity for all the participants to share new findings and the lessons learned from the recent great earthquakes and tsunamis around the globe, find out how their own activity fits into the broad picture of science, and to aid in the communication between scientists and society.

We encourage the scientific community to submit abstracts on the topics related to:
· Paleoseismology and active faults - Field reconnaissance aimed at identifying Quaternary faults (and megathrust faults, i.e. subduction zones) and determining their paleoseismic chronology and slip rates, as well as identifying and dating tsunami deposits and paleoliquefaction features from large earthquakes and tsunamis. Quaternary mapping of marine terraces, fluvial terraces and basins, beach ridges, etc., to establish framework for understanding neotectonic deformation. Use of remote sensing (LIDAR, SATELLITE IMAGES, etc.) to identify possible Quaternary faults.
· Tsunami hazard –Tsunami inundation characterization based on historical archives and prehistorical data. Use of prehistoric tsunami deposits to understand hazard. Design of tsunami flooding, hazard and evacuation maps through numerical models. Establishing a Tsunami Warning System and its relation with local, regional, national, and global, seismic and GPS networks.
· Societal concerns – Educational efforts to achieve prepared communities. Prepare warning messages, protocols, and evacuation routes for earthquake and tsunami hazards. Design of non-technical hazard assessment maps for political and educational uses. Evaluation of earthquake and tsunami hazard among potentially affected populations. Public and private efforts to decrease earthquake and tsunami hazard.

Title:
Astrobiology and prebiotic chemistry

Description:
Astrobiology and prebiotic chemistry are subjects that have gained great scientific interest in recent decades due to technological advances (satellites and computers), generating results of great geophysical interest. Astrobiology is a discipline whose objective is the study of the origin, the evolution and the distribution of life in the Universe, while Prebiotic Chemistry seeks to understand the chemical mechanisms involved in the generation of increasingly complex molecules and the estability of these molecules. To understand this complex issue, it is necessary to combine several disciplines: physics, chemistry, biology, geology, geophysics and medicine, among others. The objective of this session is to present the works that are carried out in Mexico related to astrobiology in general and to the prebiotic chemistry in particular.

Title:
Observations and circulation models on the biogeochemistry and ecology of the Gulf of Mexico

Description:
In this session we invite presentations on observations, baseline studies and modeling efforts of the circulation, biogeochemcal and ecological processes of the Gulf of Mexico of the water and sediment column, from its continental shelves to the deep sea. The objective is to contribute to the understanding of the main processes that control and modulate the oceanographic dynamics, nutrient and carbon cycling, connectivity, biological productivity, distribution and abundance patterns and the structure of the trophic networks of this basin. Comprehensive and interdisciplinary understanding of the Gulf of Mexico and the assessment of its possible responses to natural and anthropogenic forcing and disturbances such as oil spills, hurricanes, climate change and acidification is a fundamental prerequisite for the conservation, management and protection of this large ecosystem. The importance of oil exploitation, fishing, maritime transport and public health stresses the need to assess the importance of natural and anthropogenic oceanic and atmospheric forcings in this strategic region. Papers are requested adressing processes at various spatial and temporal scales, and preferably with an interdisciplinary approach. This includes results from observational networks, monitoring programs, and modeling.We propose this session as a discussion forum on the recent advances that the CIGoM Consortium and other research groups are carrying out to understand the physical, bioegeochemical and biological dynamics of this strategic region.

Title:
Paleoclimates and global change

Description:
The relevance of the study of marine (sediments and corals) and continental (sediments, speleothems, tree rings), as well as, historical and instrumental data within the context of research on variability and climate change, is based on the fact that the characteristics observed in its different components are a response to this variability, which in turn is driven by mechanisms of forcing natural or anthropogenic. We can mention solar radiation and the flow of cosmic rays, as external mechanisms, or internal mechanisms, such as ocean circulation, weathering or volcanism, including the multiple feedback processes between the subsystems that make up the Earth Climate System (ECS). Among those of anthropogenic origin, as result of agricultural, industrial, land use and recreational activities, that modify ecosystems.

The ECS is characterized by changes in a broad spatial-temporal spectrum, with short, intermediate and long-term components. The decadal and multi-decadal scales have particular relevance since the degree to which the climate is predictable on this scale has enormous social relevance.

Recently, one of the most important approaches of these studies is to be able to differentiate between the natural variability of the ECS, the changes introduced by anthropogenic activity during the last 150 years and its tele-connections, and this is becoming relevant since Global Change is having an impact on the frequency and intensity of storms and cyclones, the stability of coastal regions, agriculture, water, food, biodiversity and in the future of biological resources. Thus, research in this field, together with high resolution climate models could reduce, in some cases, the uncertainties in the prediction of the global/regional climate.

To achieve these objectives, we need multi- and interdisciplinary approaches. Here we extend an invitation to present and discuss advances in research on Paleoclimates and Global Change.

Title:
Emerging schemes for Earth observation

Description:
Earth surface scholars are convened to a special session on emerging schemes for Earth observation. It is a continuation of previous special sessions on Point Clouds and their Applications in Earth Sciences (2016) and on the use of Autonomous Unmanned Vehicles (AUVs) in Geosciences (2017). On this occasion, in addition to the previous topics, we want to extend the scope of the session to include the use of image processing tools in the cloud, tools such as Google Earth Engine and Planet API, where through a web interface or using a python API you have access to vast collections of global satellite images (Landsat, Sentinel, Modis, Planet, RapidEye) to operate on them and get the results without the need of downloading the source images.

Google Earth Engine combines a multi-petabyte catalog of satellite imagery and geospatial datasets with planetary-scale analysis capabilities and makes it available for scientists, researchers, and developers to detect changes, map trends, and quantify differences on the Earth's surface.

Likewise, Planet.com manages a constellation of 175 microsatellites with a daily revisit of any point on Earth with multispectral images of 3m resolution. Through its interface, access to the archive is enabled and to operate on them.

We convene to present works on the use of these emerging tools in the Earth sciences, to share their experience and results. The applications can be very diverse, the intention of the session is to outreach the creative use of these tools for a better understanding of the Earth surface processes.

This special session will follow the Terra 2018 workshop on points clouds and remote sensing scheduled for August 13 to 16 at CICESE, as one of the 45th anniversary of CICESE events and of the 25 anniversary of the Geology department of the same center.

Title:
Palaeoenvironmental studies in Mesoamerica: in honour of the legacy of Roger Byrne

Description:
This session is in honor of Roger Byrne (University of California, Berkeley), who deceased March 2018. Roger Byrne was involved in many paleo climate studies in Mesoamerica and has contributed significantly to enhance our knowledge about such topics, which have only been addressed in more detail since a few decades. The session therefore calls on contributions about climate change in Mesoamerican prehistory and its impact on ancient cultures. Drought has been proposed as a causal factor in major cultural transitions, including the abandonment of many sites at 900 CE, but others conclude that cultural factors were more important. In particular, we invite contributions which count on high-resolution data of δ18O, elemental geochemistry (X-ray fluorescence), polen, environmental magnetism, amongst others. Also welcome are contributions focusing on changes of the North American/Mexican Monsoon, the Intertropical Convergence Zone, Pacific Decadal Oscillation, El Niño Southern Oscillation, the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation/North Atlantic Oscillation, and their impact on the paleo climate in Mesoamerica.

Title:
Biogeochemical processes in the critical zone: responses to land use and climate change

Description:
The "critical zone" comprises the space between the top of the canopy and the bottom of the acquifer, i.e. the portion of the Earth's surface in which intensive interaction between geospheric compartments triggers fluxes of energy, water and nutrients that foster life. Processes as weathering, nutrient cycling, groundwater recharge are currently changing due to land use and climate change. In this session we invite researchers from different disciplines as ecology, hydrology, geomorphology, soil science, microbiology to present data on flux measurements done in the critical zone of specific ecosystems, determinations of rates of weathering processes, organic matter dynamics, descriptions of nutrient and pollutant transport through the critical zone, microbial ecology, green house gas emissions, and water-rock interactions. With this session we pretend to enhance our understanding of these processes in a holistic frame, that contributes to sustainable management practices and adaptation strategies to global climate change.

Title:
Earth Sciences: a perspective from outside of Mexico

Description:
This session aims to become a meeting point and a communication platform for Mexican students and scholars currently living outside of Mexico and whose fields of study can be categorized within the Earth Sciences. Our main goal is increasing the exchange of ideas and knowledge across physical and institutional borders in order to promote and establish collaborations and obtain different research perspectives.

Furthermore, we anticipate that by attending UGM meeting and interacting with colleagues in this and other sessions, Mexican students and scholars currently living abroad will improve their sense of belonging to the national geophysics community, which will promote academic and social ties, as well as boost UGM’s growth.

Given the nature of this session, a wide spectrum of research topics in different areas of Earth Sciences is expected.

Title:
Integration of exploration methods in near surface geophysics

Description:
The characterization of the subsurface structure requires the integration of two or more geophysical methods to satisfactorily resolve the ambiguities that may arise in the physical parameters of each method. These parameters are susceptible to seasonal variations, lateral and depth changes, and in particular for shallow geophysics in the presence of discontinuities or obstacles of natural or anthropic origin.

The scale and resolution faced by geophysical methods of exploration in shallow geophysics make the challenge not easy. The design of information acquisition in each case is of vital importance to carry out a study of this type. Likewise, the development of new technologies and modeling software to generate a conceptual scheme of the subsoil, have contributed substantially to the studies of shallow geophysics applied not only in the exploration of natural resources, but also to geotechnics and archeology among other objectives.

In this session the geoscientific community and related professionals are invited to present works related to the use of geophysical methods applied to shallow geophysics, where not only results of studies are integrated, but also advances in the design of acquisition, treatment and visualization of results to characterize the nearby subsoil. Highlighting the current difficulties and challenges that society demands in the application of studies in shallow geophysics.

Title:
Principles, sampling, measurement and application of environmental isotopes, 18O and 2H, of the water molecule in hydrological systems: tracer approach

Description:
The variations observed in the isotopic content of 18O and 2H, in natural waters, depend on the temperature, and give rise to the phenomenon of fractionation. These variations generate characteristic isotopic signatures in the water molecule that make it possible to identify their tracing in the hydrological cycle in space and time. In recent decades, these characteristics have been used to study transport and mass transfer within the water cycle in different geographical regions of the world (https://www.iaea.org/es/topics/water). Systematic variations in these and other types of isotopes are used to trace the origin and dynamics of water; allowing a quick recognition of hydrogeological systems that, otherwise, would require years or decades of observation.

The objective of the course is to provide the basic concepts that allow: the taking of water samples in an appropriate manner so that the information that has been raised is obtained. Present the methodology for the isotopic analysis. Analysis of the various isotopic signatures present in rainwater, surface and groundwater in a hydrogeological context.

It is intended that participants obtain a general knowledge about environmental isotopes; mass spectrometry and its application and interpretation in various systems; besides reviewing the methodologies that together provide a practical analysis that shows the utility of environmental isotopes in the study of water during the hydrological cycle.

Salt tectonics: an overview

Description:
Review of evaporitic depositional models and mechanisms of salt deformation. Styles of salt deformation from simple salt pillows to complex canopies and allochthonous salt layers. Evolution of salt to develop particular shapes and to mold the morphology of sedimentary basins is also addressed.. A number of seismic reflection profiles and exercises are used to illustrate these concepts.

During the course remote sensing techniques will be applied for the study and monitoring of the earth's surface using optical sensors and multi-rotor drones. The course is composed of three phases, the first phase consists of a theoretical module establishing i) the fundamentals of remote sensing, ii) basic elements of digital photogrammetry and iii) principles of stereoscopic vision. The second phase focuses on the design of flight trajectories and a practical exercise of frame acquisition using a multi-rotor drone. Finally, phase three is dedicated to the processing of the images acquired during phase two.

En este curso estudiaremos la metodología para el procesamiento de datos provenientes de la red asociada al Laboratorio Nacional de Clima Espacial. En esta ocasión estudiaremos series de datos provenientes del radiotelescopio Callisto y su contraparte del MEXART para identificar eventos de radio solares que afectaron las radiocomunicaciones en territorio nacional y las validaremos contra la red internacional e-callisto.

Objectives:
Demostrar a los estudiantes la importancia del procesamiento de señales utilizando supercómputo en las radiointerferencias solares causadas por el Clima Espacial.

Description:
El impetuoso crecimiento de datos informáticos que se generan hoy en día en diversas plataformas, han provocado que esta información se convierta en sensible y de alto valor, lo cual nos orilla a buscar e implementar mecanismos que nos permitan incrementar el nivel de disponibilidad de los datos en los que la catalogación, respaldo, replicación y recuperación de información se convierte en una de las actividades indispensables en este ámbito. Los datos geofísicos que se obtienen en campo o en observatorios de uso específico por medio de diversos instrumentos, se convierten en un activo de alto valor, ya que su obtención es irrepetible, y en muchos de los casos, requieren de una planeación y una inversión económica de consideración. Por otra parte, los datos deben de perdurar con el tiempo ya que podrían utilizarse en la elaboración de más de un proyecto de investigación, para mejorar la capacidad de entendimiento de los fenómenos naturales en el planeta o con el afán de encontrar la solución de un problema determinado.

Geometría fractal, sistemas dinámicos no lineales aplicados a geociencias

Por más de quince años han estado generando, la teoría de sistemas dinámicos no lineales y la geometría fractal, una diversidad de aplicaciones que han alcanzado varias áreas de las matemáticas y las ciencias naturales con un potencial de ampliar nuestra forma de entender/explicar/modelar los procesos que identificamos de la naturaleza. Este curso permite al estudiante familiarizarse en forma sólida con los conceptos importantes con ejercicios y aplicaciones a base de datos del área de cada estudiante.
