Dr. Michael Jasinski has worked over 25 years as a research scientist in the Hydrological Sciences Laboratory, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, MD USA where, since 2016, he has served as Assistant Laboratory Chief for Science. He has led remote sensing projects involving river discharge, energy and water balance modeling using data assimilation and U.S. climate analysis. He was hydrology lead of the ICESat-2 Science Team from mission conception in 2008 through launch in September 2018, and has served as Principal Investigator of the ICESat-2 Inland Water Data Product since 2013. Dr. Jasinski received the B.S. degree in civil and environmental engineering and the M.S. degree in hydrology from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY in 1974 and 1976, respectively, and the Sc.D. degree in hydrology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA in 1989. From 1976 through 1984 he worked on foreign and domestic engineering hydrology and water resources projects.

NASA’s Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite (ICESat-2) is a polar orbiting mission, launched on September 15, 2018, with over two years of nearly continuous observations. The sole instrument onboard is the Advanced Topographic Laser Altimeter System (ATLAS), a micropulse, high repetition rate, six-beam, 532 nm Lidar with photon-counting technology. Although designed primarily for detecting height changes in ice caps and sea ice in the high latitudes, it continuously observes all terrain in its track including middle and low latitude regions as well, during approximately 15 orbits per day. The official ICESat-2 products include not only cryosphere data but also global high resolution parameters associated with tree canopies, land surface, oceans, and over 1.5 million inland water bodies consisting of lakes, rivers and coastal waters. This presentation provides an overview and the status of the ICESat-2 mission including: i) a summary of the salient technological features and orbit design, ii) the official ICESat-2 science data products for ice, vegetation canopy, ocean sea level, and inland water including several examples in the middle and low latitudes, iii) a list of NASA sponsored software tools for globally browsing the two year archive and for processing both the raw data and the official ICESat-2 geophysical data products, and iv) avenues for interested users to connect with the ICESat-2 Applications Program for answering questions and assistance in possibly using ICESat-2 data in your particular science or application. The overall goal is to facilitate the use of ICESat-2 data not only for science investigations but also for improved decision support applications with societal benefit. Dr. Kerry Emanuel is the Cecil and Ida Green professor of atmospheric science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he has been on the faculty since 1981, after spending three years on the faculty of UCLA.

Emanuel’s initial focus was on the dynamics of rain and snow banding in winter storms, but his interests gradually migrated to the meteorology of the tropics and to climate change. His specialty is hurricane physics and he was the first to investigate how long-term climate change might affect hurricane activity, an issue that continues to occupy him today. His interests also include cumulus convection, and advanced methods of sampling the atmosphere in aid of numerical weather prediction.

Emanuel is the author or co-author of over 200 peer-reviewed scientific papers, and three books, including Divine Wind: The History and Science of Hurricanes, published by Oxford University Press and aimed at a general audience, and What We Know about Climate Change, published by the MIT Press and now entering its third edition. He is a co-director of MIT’s Lorenz Center, a climate think tank devoted to basic, curiosity-driven climate research.

We use and advanced tropical cyclone downscaling model applied to climate reanalyses and the latest generation of climate models to estimate current and future projected hurricane risk along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of Mexico. Risks of both high winds and heavy rains will be presented along with projections of how these risks might evolve over this century.

Daniel García Jiménez es Doctor en Geofísica por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid y Maestro en Comunicación Científica por la Universitat Pompeu Fabra de Barcelona. Como investigador ha trabajado en sismología en la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, el Servicio Geológico de EE.UU. y el proyecto Global Earthquake Model. Como divulgador colabora con medios de comunicación, imparte clases de comunicación de riesgos en la Universitat de Barcelona y ha ofrecido más de 30 cursos de comunicación científica para múltiples instituciones de investigación y educación en España y Latinoamérica.

En plena marea de infoxicación sanitaria es crucial comunicar la investigación eficazmente. Pese a estar más alejadas de la opinión pública, las Ciencias de la Tierra también se ven sometidas a la presión pública en temas como los recursos y peligros naturales, el omnipresente cambio climático o el uso del territorio. En los últimos años los investigadores hemos cobrado conciencia de la necesidad de salir de nuestra torre de marfil y tomar la palabra. Pero el mundo de los medios de comunicación y las redes sociales es ancho y ajeno a nuestras preocupaciones. ¿Cómo adentrarse en esa jungla y salir con bien? ¿Cómo traducir nuestros sesudos estudios en mensajes digeribles para la calle? ¿Cómo gestionar las incertidumbres de la ciencia y la necesidad pública de certezas? ¿Qué hemos aprendido antes y durante 2020 sobre comunicación de crisis? ¿Se puede aplicar todo esto a disciplinas más alejadas del foco mediático? En esta plática exploraremos qué dicen los estudios de comunicación científica sobre estos interrogantes a través de casos paradigmáticos dentro y fuera de las Ciencias de la Tierra.

Dr. Xubin Zeng is the Agnese N. Haury Chair in Environment, Professor of Atmospheric Sciences, and Director of the Climate Dynamics and Hydrometeorolgy Center at the University of Arizona. He is also an affiliated professor of the Applied Mathematics, Global Change, and Remote Sensing and Spatial Analysis Interdisciplinary Programs. He is a fellow of the American Meteorological Society and just received its 2021 Charles Franklin Brooks Award. He is also a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He received the Special Creativity Award from the National Science Foundation. He currently co-chairs the international GEWEX Global Atmospheric System Study Panel.

With the exponential growth of data and computer power, machine learning (ML), or more broadly data science, has received much attention in Earth system science. Here I will share my personal journey in combining data science with conventional modeling for the study of the atmosphere, ecosystem, and hydrology in the past three decades, from chaotic atmospheric data analysis in the 1990s, to spatial vegetation patterns and bifurcation studies in the 2000s, and to the more recent efforts in seasonal hurricane forecasting, river flow prediction, retrieving feature-tracking atmospheric motion vectors, and global warming projection.

Sus áreas de interés son las Ciencias Planetarias, con énfasis en aspectos físicos y dinámicos de cuerpos menores del Sistema Solar: asteroides, cometas y meteoros, y los procesos de craterización asociados a estos objetos.

Ha publicado más de 70 artículos en revistas internacionales referedas y Proceedings de Congresos Internacionales.

Como reconocimiento a su labor, el asteroide número 5088 lleva el nombre “Tancredi”; fue descubridor además de los asteroides (6252) “Montevideo”, (68853) “Vaimaca” y (73342) “Guyunusa”, los primeros descubiertos desde Uruguay.

En 2006 participó de la propuesta de la nueva definición de planeta que fue aceptada por la comunidad astronómica; lo que reclasificó a Plutón, pasándolo a considerar un “planeta enano”.

Las superficies de los planetas han sufrido a lo largo de su historia el impacto de pequeños cuerpos: asteroides y cometas. La alta densidad de cráteres en la superficie de la Luna es clara prueba de ello.

El desarrollo de vida en la Tierra ha estado pautada por estos impactos, ya que la colisión de objetos kilométricos a hipervelocidades produce desastres ambientales con consecuencias catastróficas a escala global.

El futuro de la humanidad no esta eximido de este riesgo. Por ello se ha venido trabajando para mitigar este tipo de catástrofes.

Por una parte, se esta intentando catalogar la totalidad de los objetos potencialmente peligrosos. Además, desde observatorios en la superficie terrestre y en órbita y con sondas espaciales se busca caracterizar físicamente estos objetos. Con esta información, se han diseñado diferentes técnicas para intentar desviar un asteroide en ruta de colisión con la Tierra. Finalmente, se han hecho varios ejercicios de simulacro de las acciones a tomar en caso de un peligro inminente.

La constitución física es un parámetro clave al momento de evaluar la eficacia de las diferentes técnicas de desvío.

Una de las técnicas propuestas, y que se testeará con la misión DART de la NASA en el año 2022, es el impactor cinético. Jugando a un billar cósmico, se golpeará a un asteroide con una sonda espacial masiva para desviar su curso.

¿Cómo afecta la constitución física interna la eficiencia de este método?

Los asteroides son, en su mayor parte, aglomerados de rocas de diverso tamaño mantenidos por auto gravedad. Los impactos en su superficie producen ondas sísmicas que se propagan al interior de los objetos.

Por tanto, las consecuencias de impactar un objeto monolítico o un aglomerado pueden ser muy diferentes.

Para estudiar la propagación de ondas generadas por impactos en medios granulares, estamos desarrollando experiencias de laboratorio y simulaciones numéricas usando las técnicas de Discrete Element Methods.

Describiremos algunos resultados relativos al pasaje de ondas sísmicas generadas por impactos a través de un medio granular sometido a diferentes niveles de compresión. La compresión del material simula las condiciones al interior de un asteroide sometido a auto gravedad. Se observa un aumento de la velocidad de propagación de la onda al aumentar la presión de confinamiento, y una atenuación de la onda.

Estos resultados son relevantes para entender las consecuencias de los impactos entre asteroides y para las técnicas de desvío de asteroides en curso de colisión con la Tierra.

Physical limnology

Description:
The research of physical limnology has been scarce compared with biochemical and ecology studies in several Mexican lakes.

The main purpose is to bring together diverse studies, from research projects as preliminary and published, focused on studies (water quality and biota) related to physical processes (wind driven currents, thermal structure, internal waves, mixing processes, transport, etc.) in lakes.

Also, it is to outline that tropical limnology is poorly understand compared with temperate limnology paradigms that are not observed in tropical lakes (such as the concept of thermocline).

In this session we are happy to cordially invite all scientist and students to participate in the conference and share the latest interdisciplinary issues about observational data, experimental,
theory and numerical modeling, in different world lakes.

Digital media on Earth Science communication, outreach, and education: resilience and adaptation in our new normal

Description:
In the academy, a significant portion of time and resources is invested in communicating research topics. However, the physical distancing measures present a challenge to continue with conventional communication activities. In this special session, we provide a space for sharing and critically reflect on how Earth Science communication, outreach, and education has adapted to the new reality through digital media, including but not limited to podcasts, blogs, video-blogs, online classes, online events, and online communities.

We welcome communicators, research teams, institutions, students, professors, and collectives that are involved in digital geoscience education, communication, and/or outreach and are interested in sharing the best practices in the field and creating links that promote collaborations among participants. As a result, we expect that those dialogues will help strengthen geoscience communication in Mexico and promote resiliency in the face of our new reality.

Title:
Recent advances in numerical, experimental or statistical modelling approaches for wind and marine renewable energy

Description:
The general focus of this special session is on numerical modelling and data acquisition for wind and marine renewable energy resource analysis. Studies based on numerical, experimental, or statistical models applied to renewable energy device development and performance analysis are also welcome.

This year, the session will focus on recent advances on microscale and mesoscale models, as well as meso-microscale model coupling, that improve wind and marine renewable energy resource characterization. The session not only seeks to present numerical modelling results, but also developments of remote sensing and in-situ measurement techniques, that in turn can help evaluate the numerical models and set-up improved boundary and initial input conditions for numerical weather prediction (NWP), numerical hydrodynamic prediction (NHP), and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models. We invite contributions on novel numerical or data science algorithms that may reduce uncertainty in wind energy resource characterization. We also invite individual contributions or contributions in the “meeting-within-a-meeting” format, which may focus on particular research, development, or technology innovation projects (such as, for example, project "MEWA" or the Mexican Wind Atlas “WAM”), from wind atlas development to technological and numerical Innovations, from local to regional scales. We also welcome any other discovery or solution-based studies, either on wind energy or other renewable energy or energy storage and transport systems, that may have an impact on wind energy resource characterization.

Title:
Research and professional placements: reports of academic and professional activities, and experiences on long-distance interactions

Description:
We propose this special session as a space for interaction between undergraduate and graduate students who carried out research or professional placements in 2019 or 2020, with the sponsorship of their host lab, their university, or a national programme such as those by the “Programa Delfín” or the Mexican Academy of Sciences, amongst others. The placements could have been undertaken either in person or remotely, and we invite abstracts in any area of the Earth and Space Sciences or related areas that include, in particular, methodologies for distance or digital work and recommendations on best practices. This space is being offered in recognition to the significance of placements on the training of future academics and professionals, and in particular of those who work with research teams or groups outside their own university. The accepted abstracts will all be presented in poster format, with the option to give a remote or face-to-face presentation. We will use digital platforms for the presentation of the posters, and some activities will be organized to allow for organic and unstructured interactions between speakers and between participants of the session, for example: photographs and selfies for personal avatars, chat roulettes, live or email message boards to facilitate interactions between participants with shared interests, etc.

Title:
The IUGG-Mexico in the current scientific collaboration on natural phenomena and its effects on disaster resilience

Description:
The International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) is a non-governmental scientific organization comprised by 8 associations, dedicated to the study of the cryospheric sciences, geodesy, geomagnetism and aeronomy, hydrological sciences, meteorology and atmospheric sciences, physical sciences of the oceans, seismology and physics of the earth’s interior, and volcanology and chemistry of the earth’s interior. The IUGG-Mexico National Committee has among other objectives, the promotion of studies for the disaster prevention and mitigation, as well as the encouragement for the exchange of state-of-the-art knowledge with top-level scientists in geosciences, strengthening multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary cooperation in projects among the associations and with all international scientific organizations. The collaboration in these geoscientific areas becomes essential not only for the assessment of natural hazards and risks, but also as a basis for improving the resilience to such phenomena.

In this session there will be welcome those works related to proposals for multi-, inter- and trans-disciplinary coordination in these areas; likewise, those related to the possible current and future scopes of geoscientific research for the benefit of society. We invite to submit inter- and multi-disciplinary works on emergency situations and their possible effects; collaborative projects related to COVID19 (seismic noise, oceanic and atmospheric environmental effects, surface water and groundwater, geomagnetism and space weather, respiratory protection by volcanic ash, among others) and its possible benefits; international collaborations on climate change and interdisciplinary models for evaluating natural hazards and risks. In the same way, the participation of presentations of international collaborations for the improvement of scientific policies and financing of science is encouraged.

In the session there are proposed four invited conferences given by internationally recognized scientists belonging to the IUGG. Given the current circumstances, it is proposed that this session be conducted 100% virtual by teleconference, increasing, among other advantages, the possible scope of the session.

The development of Geosciences in our country has been increasing exponentially in the last decades. This is due to the scientific and technical interest of geoscientists. Learning about the dynamic of Earth and the processes which formed the enormous geological wealth of México, is and will always be, the purpose of Geosciences. Geology has extended its horizons and now it takes into account other sciences such as Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology among others.

Geology's diversity, has favored the development of Mexican scientists. They have become more capable to understand Earth's phenomena surrounding them. An outstanding understanding, assimilation and dissemination of Earth Sciences is vital. Researchers must work on finding easier ways for teaching science for everybody's comprehension. A good researcher must have interacting skills and being committed to his work.

The objectives of this session are mainly the exchange of teaching techniques and innovative tools in the the process of education, outreach and dissemination of Earth Sciences in our country. These techniques might include tasks able to be managed inside and outside classrooms, they should be reachable everywhere and free for the society. The session accepts works related to Earth Sciences' outreach and dissemination, curriculums, impact and social retribution, and new teaching methods.

Title:
Remote sensing in geosciences - research supported by Earth observing technologies

Description:
A big part of research on geosciences (geology, oceanography, astronomy, etc.) is possible thanks to our technical ability to measure things from afar. Development of remote sensing —or teledetection— technology, has facilitated the study regions of the Earth that were otherwise inhospitable or inaccessible, as well as the observation of large portions of its surface in a relatively short period of time. Even though it is based on primitive principles, like eyesight or animal echolocation, teledetection has reached a point in its development through which it is now possible, for example, to register the sea surface temperature of the entire Gulf of Mexico within a few minutes or the 3D relief of a whole pre-Hispanic temple with millimetric precision. Sensors mounted on satellites, on land stations, and on manned (or unmanned) aerial, maritime or submarine vehicles, record a large number of acoustic or radiometric parameters that are readily transformed into geophysical variables of interest, like significant wave height, Chlorophyll concentration, tectonic subsidence, etc. For this Special Session, we invite presentations on geoscience assisted by remote sensing technologies: lidars and echosounders, radars and radiometers, spectrometers and radio scatterometers, etc., spaceborne, airborne or land-based. This session provides continuity to others presented in former editions of the MGU Annual Meeting, like "Emergent Schemes for Earth Observation" and "Development and implementation of technology for scientific research on the seas and coasts of Mexico".

Title:
Application of remote sensing to coastal regions

Description:
The development and improvement of high-resolution remote sensing are allowing for higher applications to coastal areas. For example, advances in the high resolution include a sub-kilometer resolution from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS), as well as improvements in removing land contamination from passive microwave instruments. They allow coastal monitoring with a spatial and temporal resolution that has not been fully exploited or validated. Also, more extended temporal availability and new direct or derived measurements allow a more holistic spatially-explicit study of these regions. In this session, we focus on the critical coastal seas of the world’s oceans. As these are areas of tremendous economic importance, monitoring, and understanding possible long-term changes in ocean biophysical parameters and their impacts is critical.

Sea surveys conducted by long-term monitoring programs, such as the California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI), the Mexican Investigations of the California Current (known in Spanish as IMECOCAL), and the Gulf of Mexico Research Consortium (known in Spanish as CiGoM), provide unique opportunities for validation in a coastal regime. However, other monitoring programs in other coastal regions are as valuable to validate the use of remote sensing in coastal areas.

Presentations that apply remote sensing to identify and validate the meso/submesoscale variability in coastal regions are especially sought. This topic includes validation from the seasonal to interannual time scales. Applications that use high-resolution models are also encouraged.

Ten years after the El Mayor-Cucapah earthquake (Mw 7.2)

Description:
The El Mayor-Cucapah earthquake (Mw 7.2) occurred on April 4, 2010 in the Mexicali Valley, near the border between California USA and Baja California, Mexico. This earthquake had a great impact on different areas of society, as well as on authorities and academia.

The objective of this session is to provide a space for analysis on recent research advances in the areas of Earth Sciences, Engineering and risk management; as well as the dialogue and exchange of experiences on the scientific challenges faced during and after the earthquake.

Finally, we seek to reflect on what has changed in these 10 years? What have we learned? Are we ready for a next big earthquake in Baja California? Are Mexicali and its valley resilient?

Title:
Geoscientists from the present inspiring the future ones: an online session for everyone

Description:
Until recent years, geosciences were unknown for most of the people and of little interest compared to other areas of knowledge. As history itself tells it, humankind has always wanted to understand their environment. Consequently, the study of Earth sciences has been more relevant given that natural phenomena that have destroyed entire cities or by human origin incidents associated with the Earth. The future, as we have already seen, demands experts who will attend globals issues, which are directly related to processes in our planet. This session intends to present geosciences to the non-specialist public in a plain language considering the main ideas. The fundamental idea is to develop an online session for UGM members and non-members who can access from their institutions and communities all over the country during labour hours.

Title:
Regional climate modelling and CORDEX

Description:
Regional climate models are a powerful tool to improve the knowledge of the physical, chemical and dynamical processes that regulate the weather and climate and their possible changes. Computational growth has favoured the development of a large number of global and regional climate models. Multi-institutional projects for regional climate model intercomparison such as CORDEX (Coordinated Regional Downscaling Experiment) have produce regional climate models outputs at 50 and 25 km for several domains in the world, and in Europe at 10 km; CORDEX is currently planning simulations at even finer resolution forced with global models for a historical period and for future emission scenarios. This information is available to the scientific community and it is relevant for regional process studies, for the evaluation of the possible impacts of climate change in different regions, and for decision-making and adaptation.

In this session, we are convening abstracts (in english or spanish) on:
1) Evaluation of regional climate models for different physical processes and impacts in various regions of the world, with particular emphasis on the CORDEX framework.
2) Studies of different physical processes relevant at regional scale under current and future conditions using regional climate models (dynamical, statistical, or hybrid downscaling).
3) Studies at local scale using convective permitting models.

Title:
Geophysical tools for boosting the development of green energy

Description:
The development of green energy is based on the vision of installing systems able to produce energy sustainable for the environment. Research focused on the exploration, exploitation and monitoring of the resources and of the installations are of fundamental importance for setting up cost-effective systems and of low impact for the environment.

The aim of this session is to open the discussion on how geophysics can help the development of green and low impact energy.

In this session are welcome studies of:
1) shallow and deep geophysics aimed at exploring sustainable geo-resources (geothermic, eolic, hydric, solar, Etc.)
2) geophysical systems for monitoring green energy plants.
3) geophysical methods for the assessment of the impact of the green energy exploitation.

Title:
Coastal resilience

Description:
Coastal Resilience is the capacity of any socio-ecological system (SES) to recover or reach a new equilibrium, at different rates and scales, following the impact of environmental or socio-economic stressors or shocks, while maintaining its functionality and services. Its study is highly complex given that SES are sensible to anthropogenic activities (land use changes, pollution, exploitation and economic activities), the effects of climate change (sea level rise and increased temperature), as well as the occurrence of extreme meteorological and seismic events. In this session we invite the submission of abstracts related to coastal resilience and any aspects that make its evaluation possible (stressors, shocks, thresholds, interactions, tendencies,...). The presentations can be theoretical, experimental, numerical, or based on field data, from uni-, multi-, inter- or transdisciplinary approaches.

Title:
The geology of Sonora: fundamentals and new challenges

Description:
As part of the activities to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the Estación Regional del Noroeste of the Instituto de Geología of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, we propose a special session entitled “The geology of Sonora: fundamentals and new challenges”. This session will be divided in two sections:

A) “Fundamentals”, which seeks to show the state of the art of classical geological work done in Sonora, including 1) stratigraphy, paleontology and paleogeography of Proterozoic through Quaternary rock units; 2) subduction-related magmatic activity; 3) Basin and Range extension and the opening of the Gulf of California; 4) genesis and evolution of metallic and non-metallic ore deposits; and 5) hydrogeology in arid environments.

B) “New challenges”, which will highlight the research done in new emergent disciplines focused on the quality of life of human beings and ecosystems, such as 1) global climatic change and climate forcing on reliefs; 2) mining activity, environmental pollution and assessments and remediation; 3) landscape dynamics studies in the Basin and Range province; and 4) geo-archeology.

Title:
Urban hydrographic analysis – a methodological proposal to mitigate flood damage in urban areas

Description:
Currently, urban areas suffer, year after year, numerous damages due to flooding in the rainy season. Unfortunately, and as a consequence of climate change, the rainy season will be highlighted by intense local rains with short durations, that is to say, that in a short time a lot of water will precipitate, so the areas that were already flooded, now more will flood and at the same time new areas will appear with this danger.

Currently there is no work on the origin of the water that reaches flood risk areas. The activities that are carried out are focused on cleaning and dusting the hydraulic areas of the drains, channels, streams or rivers that cross the urban area, from which tons of garbage, organic matter and sediment are obtained. However, due to urban growth, these hydraulic areas have already been exceeded by the volume of water that runs down the streets.

The Urban Hydrographic Analysis course, a proposal to reduce flood damage in urban areas, serves to train and give students tools to help them identify the origin of the water and the direction that it follows along each of its streets in the areas. urban, until its discharge, which can be in a river bed or a flood zone. With the identification of the origin and the direction of the flow through the streets, the student will be able to locate the places where he can propose some deviation, caused flood or other work, so that he does not reach the areas in danger of flooding.

The student during this course will learn a new methodology for hydrographic analysis in an urban area and will apply it in areas at risk of flooding in their locality, to try to find sites to develop works or preventive strategies and develop preventive programs.

Title:
Marine spatial planning – guidance on concepts and good practices

Description:
This course will focus on fundamental aspects of Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) and will be divided into two parts. In the first part, we will present definitions and terminology that will help explain what we understand by MSP, what are its benefits, and what results one may expect from a good Marine Spatial Plan. In the second part, we will discuss the 10 steps of the workflow that a good MSP needs to follow, according to Ehler and Douvere (2009). Following these steps will ensure that we achieve a successful MSP. We will also discuss what has worked and what has not worked Marine Spatial Planning, using case studies from around the world. The course consists of a MSP development guide that is useful when one has little time, little funding, little information, or other resources. This guide is also useful when we do not have a background in management or administration. For those with a Science or Engineering background, it is a priceless first approach to the subject, so that we do not need to learn “on the job”. A final test will be applied at the end of the course.

Title:
Technical aspects of design and manufacture of mesocosm to evaluate benthic fluxes in sediments

Description:
This course will focus on fundamental aspects of design, construction, and performance of different mesocosm or incubation chambers used to evaluate benthic fluxes in sediments. Theoretical, technical, and practical concepts of the implementation of mesocosms and its application as a resource to study and evaluate benthic processes in sediments will be outlined. Some considerations respect to water volume, stirring rate, portability, and sturdiness will be presented.

Relevant theoretical aspects involving benthic fluxes calculations and its implementation to study not only nutrient cycling, but also organic pollutants, or metabolic dynamics of seagrasses will be explained.

This course is mainly an introductory course to the mesocosm design and construction. Information on materials, suppliers, workshops with contact information, and practical advice on how, when, and where incubation techniques could supply answers to the evaluation of benthic processes in sediments from different ecosystems such as lakes, rivers, or coastal lagoons will be discussed.

It is an excellent opportunity for those interested in supply evidence of the importance of coastal marine ecosystems not only as reservoirs but also as highly dynamic ecosystems. Of course some practical examples will be presented and a simple prototype will be shown and if some of you are interested we could design and built an incubation system according to your specific needs.

Title:
Archeometric dating: thermoluminescence, radiocarbon and archaeomagnetism

Description:
Within archeometry, the application of dating methods is essential to establish the chronology of archaeological sites. Cultural materials in an archaeological context are varied and some of them can be very good indicators of temporality, however, is very important the analysis of previous archaeological context to the sampling and know the characteristics of cultural materials in the site (pottery, bones, stucco, shells, organic rest, floors, ovens, etc.) to apply the appropriate method of dating for each material. Sometimes the application of dating methods cannot be carried out for reasons such as improper handling of samples (contamination), the samples are subjected to artificial or ambient conditions affecting measurement or lack of field elements that must be measured in situ.

It is essential archaeological context analysis and obtaining appropriate materials for these indicators are correct timing for the event you want to date , this defines the establishment of reliable chronologies and more accurately. This course aims to provide the necessary elements to develop a strategy appropriate sampling for each archaeological context, besides the criteria that must be followed to select the appropriate method of dating, in addition to the basics and sampling techniques required to implement each the methods studied in the course. Knowledge of the scope and limitations of each method help us integrate precisely in order to generate more robust and consistent chronologies.

Knowing the fundamentals and methodologies sampling of dating methods (thermoluminescence, radiocarbon and archaeomagnetism) for proper sampling during archaeological excavation.

Title:
Different applications of the MT method and new generations of UMT systems in data acquisition, processing and management

Description:
The magnetotelluric method (MT) is a passive method of geophysical exploration, where the equipment with the same sensors’ arrangement measures electric and magnetic fields that naturally flow underground at different depths. That is, after its installation the equipment is left measuring without changing its position, with a respect of the time length of measures and sampling frequency, the subsoil information can be obtained from the near-surface to hundreds of km deep.

Therefore, the MT method is widely used for various exploration studies, ranging from shallow depths with environmental problems, to deeper investigations for mineral exploration, groundwater detection, prospecting for geothermal and petroleum energy sources, etc. In an addition to being an invaluable tool in the aforementioned studies, it can be used for greater depth investigation for regional tectonic and continental geodynamic processes.

Since the late 1980s, the development of the use of remote reference technique, robust processing, corrections of different types of distortion, multidimensional modeling and new inversion methods have made the Interpretation of magnetotelluric data to be one of the most effective methods for this type of research. In this course will use a new generation Ultra wide-band MT system, developed by the company Phoenix Geophysics, which provides simultaneous recording of Audio Magnetotelluric (AMT), Magnetotelluric (MT) and Long Period (LP) bands of the natural electromagnetic field in one recording. Where the MT data acquisition has been simplified, reducing system setup time and providing additional data quality control and assessment capabilities in the field, and data processing.

The course will consist of an introduction to the MT method, where the basic theory of the method will be presented. Subsequently, the measurement equipment will be described, it will be shown how the acquisition of data in the field is generated, and real data processing will be performed to obtain the apparent resistivity curves. Finally, several examples of studies in Mexico and the world will be presented in different exploration areas, such as: groundwater, mineral and oil exploration, geothermal studies, volcanology, and plate tectonics.

Title:
Hydrogeochemistry applied

Description:
In this course, different hydrogeochemical diagrams will be used, and the VISHMOD (Virtual Samples in Hydrochemical Modeling) methodology will be introduced to study the evolution of aquifers in an interdisciplinary way. At the end of the course, the student will be able to make an excellent hydrogeochemical characterization in different geological settings, and if he has sufficient hydrogeochemical bases, he will be able to establish hydrogeochemical modeling strategies for his analysis, which comply with a rigorous validation process.
