Dr. Pinilla-Alonso received her Ph.D. from the Universidad de La Laguna of Tenerife, Spain. After that, she had different postdoctoral positions at NASA Ames Research center, Moffett Field, USA, at the Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía, Granada, Spain, and at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, USA. In 2015, she joined the Florida Space Institute of the University of Central Florida as a visiting scientist before joining it as an Associate Researcher in Planetary Science in 2016. Her work focuses on the study of the surface properties of small bodies in the Solar System.

Dr. Pinilla-Alonso was part of the group that first discovered water ice and complex organics on the surface of the asteroid 24 Themis leading the modeling effort. She also has lead numerous international observational campaigns in support of NASA missions such as New Horizons, OSIRIS-ReX, and Lucy.

Since 2017, Dr. Pinilla-Alonso is also the Deputy Principal Scientist of the Arecibo Observatory and acts as the Science Manager since December 2018. As such, Noemí supports the director of the observatory in leading a group of 20 scientists at different career levels (from senior scientists to Ph. D students).

It has been more than 25 years since the discovery of the first trans-Neptunian object (15760) 1992 QB1 in the modern era. In the intervening years, more than 3000 KBOs and Centaurs have been discovered, and this is still only a small fraction of the estimated total population. TNOs are a compositionally and dynamically diverse population that includes some of the most primitive bodies in the Solar System. This population preserves a record of the significant dynamical dispersal of the protoplanetesimal disk that followed the era of planet formation. Despite this progress, much is still unknown about the composition of the TNOs.

Spectroscopy of TNOs was for years a powerful tool to study their surface composition but it has reached its limits from ground-based facilities and there is no instrumentation available now capable of significantly increasing that existing sample with sufficient quality for compositional analysis.

James Webb Space Telescope (to be launched in 2021) will succeed the Hubble Space Telescope as NASA’s premier space-based telescope for planetary science. The NIRSpec instrument on board of JWST will provide high-quality data that will surpass the quality of the data available by orders of magnitude. DisCo, lead by the Florida Space Institute, is the only program approved by JWST to study the surface composition of small bodies in the Solar System. With it, we aim to assess the relative ratio of water ice, complex organics, silicates, and volatiles on the surface of a large sample of TNOs. This information is vital to improving models of the formation of our Solar System and other planetary systems. Moreover, it relates to disciplines such as astrochemistry, cosmochemistry, and astrobiology, being relevant to our understanding of the origin of water and life on Earth and possibly elsewhere.

In this talk, I will review the actual state of the JWST, to be launched before the end of 2021, and will show the basis of the DisCo project and how it will interrogate the surface of these ice rocks in the Solar System. This is the time to provide such critical information to the scientific community, and JWST is the optimal avant-garde tool to face that challenge.

Dr. Mann is Distinguished Professor of Atmospheric Science and Director of the Earth System Science Center at Penn State University.

His research focuses on climate science and climate change. He has received numerous awards including the National Conservation Achievement Award of the National Wildlife Foundation, the Friend of the Planet Award from the NCSE, the Award for Public Engagement with Science from the AAAS, the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement, and election to the National Academy of Sciences in 2020. He made Bloomberg News' list of fifty most influential people in 2013. He has authored more than 200 publications, and five books including Dire Predictions, The Hockey Stick and the Climate Wars, The Madhouse Effect, The Tantrum that Saved the World, and The New Climate War.

Human-caused climate change is arguably the greatest threat we face as a civilization. Efforts to attack and deny the scientific evidence have constituted a major impediment to action over the past two decades. At a time when we appear to be moving past outright denial of the problem, we face a multi-pronged strategy by polluting interests to distract, deflect, attack, and divide the climate activist community. This involves, among other things, (a) efforts to deflect attention from systemic change and regulatory policy solutions to personal behavior, (b) doomist framing that disempowers us by exaggerating the threat in such a way as to make catastrophic changes now seem unavoidable, and (c) the promotion of false solutions that seek to enable the continued burning of fossil fuels that is at the very root of the problem. It is important to recognize while there is great urgency in acting, there is also agency. There is still time to for us to avert the worst impacts of climate change if we act now and we act boldly. I will discuss what we can do to fight back, emphasizing the importance of both urgency AND agency in efforts to save our planet.

Martin Schimmel's main research interests are in different fields of seismology and include the physical phenomena of seismic wave propagation, the detection and understanding of the multitude of seismic signals, and the different strategies to image and constrain the structure of the Earth interior. In his recent work, he focused on crustal and upper mantle structure, seismic interferometry and noise generation. Further, he developed several new techniques to improve weak-signal detection and identification to increase our constraints on the fine structure of the Earth.

Ross S. Stein is 2021 AGU College of Fellows Distinguished Lecturer, 2020 Distinguished Lecturer of the Seismological Society of America, a 2019 Centennial Lecturer of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), and 2018 International Distinguished Lecturer of the Geological Society of America. A Fellow of the AGU and GSA, Stein received the 2012 Gilbert F. White Natural Hazards Award from AGU, gave a 2012 TEDx Bermuda talk, ‘Defeating Earthquakes,’ and received the 2000 Eugene M. Shoemaker Distinguished Achievement Award of the USGS. In 2003, the Science Citation Index reported that Stein was the second most cited author in earthquake science during the preceding decade; he was tenth most cited during 1900-2010. In 2010, Stein cofounded the Global Earthquake Model (GEM Foundation), chairing its Science Board until 2015. In 2015, Stein cofounded Temblor, a catastrophe modeling company. Stein helped write, animate, and appeared in the award-winning 2004 National Geographic IMAX film, ‘Forces of Nature.’

I will argue that large earthquakes can promote and inhibit failure on nearby faults, triggering or suppressing nearby quakes, and that the transfer of stress plays a governing role in this interaction. Through a series of physical demonstrations and slides, I will use these concepts to explain the distribution of mainshocks, aftershocks, and progressive earthquake sequences, around the world.

In this talk, I will be conveying work of my outstanding collaborators, Geoffrey King, Shinji Toda, Jian Lin, Tom Parsons, Jim Dieterich, Keith Richards-Dinger, Aykut Barka, Dave Jackson, and Volkan Sevilgen, who bring a rich range of insights and talents.

At heart, we find that the stress imparted by earthquakes does not simply turn seismicity on or off; rather, the background seismicity rate is enhanced by stress increases, and suppressed by stress decreases. This, we believe, best explains why seismicity in stress trigger zones is often patchy or discontinuous; why seismicity rate drops in stress shadows can be subtle or absent, and why some aftershock sequences last for a year and others persist for centuries.

While this model is a far cry from earthquake prediction, it perhaps can take us on the road to the more useful and accurate earthquake forecasts that we all seek.

Title:
Recent advances in numerical, experimental, or statistical modeling for wind power and marine renewables

Description:
The general focus of this special session is numerical modeling and data analysis in the area of ​​offshore wind and renewable energy. Talks on numerical, experimental, or statistical models of the design of renewable energy devices are also welcome.

This year the session will focus in particular on recent advances in microscale and mesoscale models, as well as their coupling, that improves the characterization of energy resources. The session not only seeks the presentation of works on numerical results, but also the development of remote sensing methods and in-situ measurements, which allow both evaluating numerical simulations and defining better boundary or initial conditions for numerical meteorological prediction models, hydrodynamics, or computational fluid dynamics models. Title:
Chihuahua: Land of challenges and mine tales

Chihuahua, like the rest of the north of the country, began its systematic mining activities from very early times during the colony. Along with such activities, the first populations developed and together with them the abnormal concentrations of some mineral species that, when exposed to the weathering in the dumps, came to constitute some kind of pollution plumes. Some of these plumes have already been diluted, while others are still current as real challenges for the development of Chihuahua.

Title:
OLLIN-IGCP669 Central Mexico: Seismic hazards in the Transmexican Volcanic Belt: Advances in neotectonics, paleoseismology, historical and instrumental seismicity

Description:
Although most of the destructive earthquakes that have affected Mexico are generated in the Pacific subduction zone, there is evidence of other historical earthquakes (e.g. 12/27/1568, 19/06/1858, 11/02/1875, 19/11/1912, 4/01/1920, with magnitudes Mw > 6), which serve as a reminder that the Transmexican Volcanic Belt (TMVB) also represents a major seismic hazard. This is particularly important, as more than half of the population of Mexico is concentrated in this area.

Several studies carried out in the last few decades in the area have been dedicated to the seismicity monitoring, identification of the faults responsible for major historical and prehistoric earthquakes, and the characterization of potentially active faults, thereby helping to increase our knowledge of the seismic hazard in the TMVB.

The purpose of this session is to enable researchers to present advances on the understanding of seismogenic sources in the TMVB in an interdisciplinary manner and with different time scales, including Neotectonics, Quantitative Geomorphology, Paleoseismology and historical and instrumental seismicity studies. We’ll specially focus, but not exclusively, in the integration of these data into seismic hazard analyses, within the frame of the fault2SHA initiative. The session is open to anyone working on the subject and will encourage to integrate the participants of the OLLIN-IGCP669 network (Unesco-IUGS), which has as its ultimate objective the implementation of fault2SHA tools to regions around the most populated areas in Latin America.

Title:
Regional climate modeling and CORDEX

Description:
Regional models are a powerful tool to improve the knowledge of the physical, chemical and dynamical processes that regulate the weather and climate and their possible changes. Computational growth has favoured the development of a large number of global and regional models. Multi-institutional projects for regional climate model simulations such as CORDEX (Coordinated Regional Downscaling Experiment) have produce regional climate models outputs at 50 and 25 km for several domains in the world, and in Europe at 10 km; CORDEX is currently developing the protocol for simulations at even finer spatial resolution forced with global models for a historical period and for future emission scenarios. The CORDEX information is available to the scientific community and it is relevant for regional process studies, for the evaluation of the possible impacts of climate change in different regions, and for decision-making and adaptation.

In this session, we are soliciting topics on:

1) Evaluation of regional models (dynamical or statistical) for different physical processes and impacts in various regions of the world including the CORDEX domains.
2) Studies of different physical processes relevant at regional scale under current and future conditions using regional models (dynamical, statistical, or hybrid downscaling).
3) Studies at local scale using convective permitting models.
4) VIA (vulnerability, impacts and adaptation) studies under climate change conditions.

We propose this special session as a space for interaction between undergraduate and graduate students who carried out research or professional placements in 2019 or 2020, with or without academic or industrial sponsorship. Title:
Seismotectonics in the Mexicali-Imperial Valley, Mexico-USA border region

Description:
The Mexicali-Imperial Valley, located on both sides of the US-Mexico international border, is traversed by a network of active faults that involves the southern sector of the San Andreas Fault, the Imperial, Cerro Prieto, and Indiviso faults, as well as the southern part of the San Jacinto fault system, and which together accommodate most of the relative motion between the North American and Pacific plates at this latitude. Notwithstanding the above, active faults in the region are little known. In this area, for example, important tremors of greater magnitude have occurred, including the one of May 18, 1940 (M6.9) known as the Imperial Valley earthquake, which generated an average slip of 2 m and a rupture of ~ 60 km and more recently that of El Mayor-Cucapah (Mw7.2) of April 4, 2010, an earthquake that caused a surface rupture of around 120 km in length, along various fault structures, with displacements greater than 4 m. Each of these tremors showed the existence of large, hitherto unknown faults. The first made it possible to document the Imperial Fault; the second, the Indiviso Fault. Everything indicates that these faults already existed but were buried by sediments, which made their identification difficult.

On the other hand, recent studies have reported structures buried by sediments in different areas of the Mexicali-Imperial Valley. Another situation that exists is that the hazard models (UCERF3) assign ~ 35 mm / year in the border sector of the Imperial Fault, which differs with geological slip rates of ~ 15 mm / year, so it is considered that the missing slip is due to other faults in the international border region, south of the San Jacinto fault zone. Even though CICESE has been recording seismicity locally in the region for almost 50 years (including a network in the Cerro Prieto Geothermal Field) and Caltech since 1973 has been expanding the southern California seismic network in the Imperial Valley, it is evident that there are still structures in the region that have not been documented and represent a seismic/geological risk, which may have not only scientific implications but also an impact on the communities of the region, making their identification imperative.

This transdisciplinary session of convened and invited presentations by academics, researchers, and officers of the UGM and partner societies with Earth and Space Science Sections (SEG, AGU, EAGE, IUGG, JpGU, MexSIAM, IOP, etc.) will focus on theoretical or practical approaches, policy-driven frameworks, and case studies showcasing best praxis in the Geosciences that contextualize and aim to achieve diversity, ethics, equity, and inclusivity. Examples can be driven by the geosciences or conducted in partnership with broader stakeholder groups outside of science. We also invite contributions of studies that have assessed the history and current status of any aspect of DEEI in Academia or in Geoscience-led organizations. Officers from the partner societies will be invited to present implemented policies or working group reports addressing these issues:

• Diversity – What types of diversity (ability, career stage, ethnicity, gender, institutional, racial) have been measured and how? How is success defined?
• Ethics - How well is the geoscience community responsibly upholding the standards of scientific conduct and displaying ethical behaviours?
• Equity - How has the geoscience community increased access and success for people in marginalized groups?
• Inclusion – How inclusive and welcoming are the geosciences (i.e., international participation, outside geoscience expertise, non-scientists etc.)? Coastal resilience

Description:
Coastal Resilience is the capacity of any socio-ecological system (SES) to recover or reach a new equilibrium, at different rates and scales, following the impact of environmental or socio-economic stressors or shocks, while maintaining its functionality and services. Its study is highly complex given that SES are sensible to anthropogenic activities (land use changes, pollution, exploitation and economic activities), the effects of climate change (sea level rise and increased temperature), as well as the occurrence of extreme meteorological and seismic events. In this session we invite the submission of abstracts related to coastal resilience and any aspects that make its evaluation possible (stressors, shocks, thresholds, interactions, tendencies,...). The presentations can be theoretical, experimental, numerical, or based on field data, from uni-, multi-, inter- or transdisciplinary approaches.

Title:
Technologies applied to soil science

Description:
For many years, the properties of soils have been evaluated mainly qualitatively or semi-quantitatively. Recently the use of modern technologies, such as data pattern analysis software with machine learning methods, color measurement systems, image analysis software with computer vision techniques, 3D scanner and printers, have allowed the development of new methods for the determination of the properties of soils that offer a more quantitative and exact approach.

On the other hand, the modernization of soil science has also led to the creation of software tools that a) allow the processing and evaluation of soil information to know their environmental functions; and b) evaluate the quality of irrigation water from hundreds of water wells in seconds.

In this sense, the session "Technologies applied to soil sciences" will present the advances of these new tools and methods developed in Mexico, which place us in a relevant position within the new soil science, that of the 21st century.

Heavy metals in urban soils and dusts

Pollution of urban soils and dust is a serious environmental problem today, both for society and for the government, since it affects the health of the urban system and the population. In fact, it is estimated that by 2030, 60% of the world's population will live in urban areas. Title:
Application of remote sensing to societally important regions: estuarine, coastal, tropical and polar waters

Description:
Remote sensing from satellites, suborbital, and ground platforms provides valuable data for managing regions with great socio-economic importance, including coastal, estuarine, tropical, and polar waters. There has been tremendous growth in the availability of sub-kilometer resolution data with active and passive observations spanning UV to microwave, resulting from new sensors and advances in scientific data and information processing techniques (e.g., artificial intelligence/machine learning).

In addition to current remote sensing applications in these critical regions, the session seeks contributions that demonstrate and prototype evolving and emerging capabilities to support improved understanding and applications within these high-priority regions. Our particular focus is on satellite remote sensing to characterize (sub)-mesoscale processes and features as they relate to coastal waters for fisheries, hazards, inclusive of multiple remote sensing data sets and field observations. As well as coupled modeling and data assimilations approaches to better resolve and track this scale of features in space (local to EEZs) and over-time scales ranging from hourly to interannual. Thus, this includes satellite time series (e.g., ocean color, synthetic aperture radar), allowing for a more holistic spatially explicit study of these regions and their impact on long-term ecological changes.

Likewise, transboundary (e.g., land-sea interface) and trans-disciplinary (e.g., physical and biological/biogeochemical; environmental & social science data) approaches are greatly encouraged, and studies highlight potential technology transfer from developed to developing regions. Stakeholders of interest include researchers and application developers and managers, and decision-makers within these regions of interest to help assess and better address their data user needs and requirements.

Preliminary results of September 7, 2021 earthquake of Mw7.1 in Acapulco, Guerrero

On September 7, 2021, the Mexican National Seismological Service reported an earthquake with magnitude 7.1 located 11 km southeast of Acapulco, in Guerrero. This earthquake occurred at 20:47 (Central Mexico time) and was felt in the states of Guerrero, Morelos, Puebla, Michoacan, Oaxaca, Queretaro, Guanajuato, Estado de Mexico and Ciudad de Mexico.

In this special session, contributions of preliminary results related to this earthquake on source parameters, path, site effects, seismic hazard, or any other contribution are accepted.

Also, this session aims to know the current research lines and to encourage possible collaborations among those who are analyzing and/or interpreting the September 7, 2021 earthquake.

Title:
Applied hydrogeochemistry

Description:
In this course, different hydrogeochemical diagrams will be used to identify processes that explain the evolution of groundwater in aquifers. At the end of the course, the student will make a hydrogeochemical characterization in different geological scenarios. If he has sufficient theoretical bases, he will be able to apply the VISHMOD methodology to establish modeling strategies that contribute to the knowledge of groundwater.

Title:
Scientific visualization and storytelling

Description:
Data production today is abysmal. The management, treatment and transformation of this information to generate knowledge is a challenge in all areas of science. Particularly, the process of disseminating scientific findings to other colleagues or the general public is not an easy path. For this to be done effectively proper narration (storytelling) must be used, supported by graphics, static images and videos (visualizations). This course-workshop presents methodologies for creating narratives using high-level scientific visualizations and explores how these narratives can improve the transmission of knowledge among broader audiences. The Python programming language and its scientific ecosystem (numpy, pandas, matplotlib, plotly, seaborn) are used to analyze and visualize data, thus presenting examples of successful narratives. A basic-intermediate knowledge of Python is required.

Title:
Sampling techniques for dating archaeological context by archaeomagnetism, radiocarbon and thermoluminescence

Description:
Within archeometry, the application of dating methods is essential to establish the chronology of archaeological sites. Cultural materials in an archaeological context are varied and some of them can be very good indicators of temporality, however, is very important the analysis of previous archaeological context to the sampling and know the characteristics of cultural materials in the site (pottery, bones, stucco, shells, organic waste, floors, ovens, etc.) to apply the appropriate method of dating for each material. Sometimes the application of dating methods cannot be carried out for reasons such as improper handling of samples (contamination), the samples are subjected to artificial or ambient conditions affecting measurement or lack of field elements that must be measured in situ.

It is essential archaeological context analysis and obtaining appropriate materials for these indicators are correct timing for the event you want to date, this defines the establishment of reliable chronologies and more accurately. This course aims to provide the necessary elements to develop a strategy appropriate sampling for each archaeological context, besides the criteria that must be followed to select the appropriate method of dating, in addition to the basics and sampling techniques required to implement each the methods studied in the course. Knowledge of the scope and limitations of each method help us integrate precisely in order to generate more robust and consistent chronologies.

Objective:
Knowing the fundamentals and methodologies sampling of dating methods (thermoluminescence, radiocarbon and archaeomagnetism) for proper sampling during archaeological excavation.

Title:
Geochemical speciation modeling software

Description:
Geochemical modeling describes reactions that occur in a geological medium applying chemical reactions and the composition of the water. The need to understand the processes occurring between minerals that make up the sediments' solid components and water that exist in between the minerals motivates the effort in the development of geochemical modeling software.

Applications of geochemical models are essential in several environmental problems, such as calculating the composition of natural waters, measuring flowing groundwater or surface water, and the formation and dissolution of rocks and minerals in geologic formations.

A geochemical speciation modeling software is responsible for calculating the distribution of dissolved species between solutes and aqueous complexes, and also computes saturation indexes for different minerals.

In this course, we will introduce two geochemical modeling packages. One the PHREEQC which stands for PH REdox EQuilibrium in C language by USGS and the other the SHPECK software by Damiani et al. 2015 at Universidad de Rio Grande en Brasil. Both are developed to model geochemical equilibrium systems using the mass-balance conditions based on the phase rule concept Garrels and Christ 1965. In general, they accept any general combination of elements, species, and reactions, allowing the user to create different environments, simulations and, therefore, fully control any aspect and configuration of the model. It provides an interactive and intuitive user interface as well as the support of a built-from-the-ground database structure that handles the management of the whole thermodynamic data used for the geochemical modeling.

We will present a thorough computer science-based review about the available geochemical modeling software (only programs that provide speciation modeling), expressing relevant particularities such as input and output options, user interaction, file formats, and software environment together with installation procedures.

Finally, we will use PHREEQC and SHPECK to model the diagenetic reactions observed in a sandstone reservoir, and performing a comparative study with each geochemical modeling software.

3D modeling of magnetotelluric data

Description:
In this course, we will deal with theoretical and practical aspects of the 3D modeling of magnetotelluric data. We are going to utilize ModEM, which is the most used code in Academia. In addition, we will introduce a novel forward modeling code implemented with the Finite Element technique. With this code, it can be better analyzed the topographical effects in magnetotelluric observations.

The modern Oil Industry, demands for Technicians and Professionals who have multidisciplinary skills, abilities and knowledge in fundamental areas such as Geology, Geophysics, Interpretation of Logs and Reservoir Engineering for making correct and timely decisions in their different jobs.

The objective of this workshop is for the participants to develop skills and abilities for the application, interpretation and evaluation of the different types of Geophysical Well Logs, in the different phases of the Upstream process. This through practical exercises of real wells that will promote analysis in different geological environments.

The content of the Workshop ranges from conventional Open Hole Logs, such as cased hole records, and modern logs such as image logs and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance.
