Resumen:

The Vulcano island, the southernmost of the Aeolian volcanic archipelago (southern Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy), has presented several unrest periods, the last in 2021, which have increased the volcanic hazard significantly. To improve the detection and characterization of these phenomena, and to better estimate the influence area and duration along the region, a dense and continuous set of measurements of related geophysical parameters is crucial.

As part of the CAVEAT project, a dense array of 120 wireless seismic nodes were deployed on three islands of the Aeolian volcanic archipelago, 40 of which were put in the Vulcano island to detect and locate the shallow weak seismicity related to both volcanic and tectonic activity, to constrain the crustal structure through regional and local tomographies, and to characterize the source mechanisms in this region.

Even though volcano-tectonic and non-volcanic tremors has been identified along this entire area thanks to the permanent seismic network and temporal dense arrays at different years, in the Vulcano island, another type of seismic signals at frequencies larger than 10 Hz were observed in some specific areas (mainly around the La Fossa Caldera), which could be related to gas emissions, temperature anomalies and vapor output fumaroles. Here we present the on-going analysis of the continuous records at Vulcano at the nodal and permanent broad-band stations to better understand the relationship between the magmatic degassing and seismic signals.

This study is supported by the collaboration INGV – University of Geneva – UNAM, as part of the INGV Pianeta Dinamico project 2023-2025 CAVEAT “Central-southern Aeolian islands: Volcanism and tEAring in the Tyrrhenian subduction system” (grant no.
