RECONSTRUCTING HOLOCENE GEOMAGNETIC FIELD EVOLUTION IN PERU: THE REGIONAL ARCHAEOMAGNETIC DATABASE AND DIPOLAR MODEL
Peru preserves one of the oldest and most continuous archaeological records in the Americas, providing an exceptional natural archive for reconstructing the evolution of the Earth’s magnetic field throughout the Holocene. Despite this unique potential, no comprehensive regional characterization of the full geomagnetic field vector has yet been established from the available archaeomagnetic evidence. This study aims to compile, critically evaluate, and rigorously select all existing archaeomagnetic data to build a robust database. This framework will serve as the starting point for developing high-resolution paleosecular variation curves and the first regional dipolar geomagnetic model for western South America, enabling a detailed characterization of the temporal evolution of the geomagnetic field. The new, updated database will provide fundamental insights into Holocene geomagnetic field behavior, substantially improve our understanding of paleosecular variation in South America and establish a strong reference for future archaeomagnetic investigations in Peru and neighboring regions.
